PALCI Discount

A sliding scale of discounts, dependent on how many years an institution commits to subscribe.

1. One year renewable subscription - 10% discount per year, off the standard 'small, medium or large' institution rate dependent on FTE.
2. Commitment to a minimum of a two year subscription - 15% discount, as above
3. Commitment to a minimum of three year subscription - 20% discount, as above.

'One off purchase' approach: TannerRitchie welcomes approaches from institutions that would prefer to purchase permanent access to MEMSO, rather than commit to annual subscriptions. Once again, discounts would be offered to consortium members.

About the Product

MEMSO (Medieval and Early Modern Sources Online) is the most comprehensive and indispensable resource for the study and research of British history at the academic level. MEMSO is a constantly expanding database of the key sources for British history, and British relations with Colonial America, the West Indies and the Far East between circa 1100 and 1800, in both book and manuscript form. Designed by researchers for researchers, MEMSO has proven to be a valuable resource not just for historians, but for academics throughout the humanities.

A few of the key series available and in development through 2008 include:

  • Letters and Papers of Henry VIII (1507-1547)
  • Calendars of State Papers (England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Venice, Milan, America, the West Indies and the Middle and Far East (c. 1500 to 1780)*
  • Calendars of Papal Letters (c.1200 to 1500)
  • Calendars of Patent and Close Rolls (c. 1200 to 1560)
  • Foedera, by Thomas Rymer (1069-1654).
  • The Rolls Series – key documents, manuscripts, chronicles and letters for Medieval Britain.
* Manuscripts available.

MEMSO FAQs:

Full details can be seen by visiting http://sources.tannerritchie.com/ or http://www.tannerritchie.com/

What manuscripts from the English State Papers are included?

State Papers, Foreign, Edward VI, Mary, Elizabeth I and State Papers, Spain, are available now. Our next project is the entire State Papers, France.

Are there limits to simultaneous users?

 No

Can off campus access be arranged?

Yes (including Athens and EZProxy). Shibboleth/OpenAthens compatibility is in development for launch fall 2008.

Are MARC records available?

Yes, MARC records are available and have been provided by the University of St. Andrews. There will be a small extra fee for this service - $250 USD/$285 CAD - purely to cover administration costs. This fee will be added to the annual subscription fee. Example MARC records for consultation purposes can be forwarded upon request.

How are books accessed on MEMSO?

Books are accessed 'one page at a time' via online viewing and searching, or by full book download of a searchable text pdf file. The combination of these two approaches allows for a 'best of both worlds' for researchers able to work permanently on your institution’s LAN, and those who like to work offline or remotely.

Will MEMSO stop developing and growing in the future?

We have no plans to stop adding books, or to stop improving the means of access. Instead we plan to increase the speed at which we add books, create a fast 'search as you type' search engine designed specifically for historians [available now], and make our manuscript coverage the most large-scale and easily used available. We also take part in research projects aimed at developing new methods of source digitisation and access.

How do I search?

The complete catalogue is searchable using a new and highly fine-grained search interface of single books, entire series, or date ranges, for phrases. The search method has recently added the ability to search works with pre-standard orthography using "Web 2.0" and "AJAX" techniques. Other features in development are user bookmarking, commenting, a forum and a wiki.

I would like a particular book/series digitised. Can you add it to MEMSO?

We encourage suggestions from users, and do our best to meet the needs of our clients whenever possible. In short, the answer is very often ‘yes’.
